Every summer the Library collaborates with Community & Cultural Services to produce a series of seaside pop-up libraries at the Annenberg Community Beach House and Dorothy Green Park with a variety of beach and reading themes. Story times, hula hooping, steel drumming, crafts and ukulele classes are popular.

Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library

The Friends of the Library support a rich array of ongoing programming at all branches, including Santa Monica Reads, Summer Reading for Adults, Kids and Teens, SMPL at the Beach, Soundwaves New Music Series Concerts and El Día de Los Niños/El Día de Los Libros (Children’s Day/Book Day).

The Heal the Bay works with the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium to ensure the protection of animals that live in the Bay. There are over 100 local species on exhibit at the aquarium, which allows visitors to immerse themselves through hands-on activities and daily educational programs. The Santa Monica Pier Aquarium contributes to the Library’s annual SMPL at the Beach, by educating children on how to protect animals and being conscious of how their actions affect marine life.

In partnership with The People Concern the Library is implementing pop-up and drop-in services conducted by a Community Outreach Specialist for homeless individuals at all library locations. Most recently, these pop-ups have been held at the Main Library.

Santa Monica Public Library has a long and fruitful partnership with the Santa Monica Farmers Market including programs with authors and celebrity chefs, Library pop ups at Farmers Market, and market engagement at the Pico Branch grand opening.

Every year at the end of the school year librarians reach out to SMMUSD students to promote the Summer Reading Program. Every year more and more students sign up and are excited to read and receive their prizes.

UCLA Health 50 Plus is a free membership program that caters to people age 50 or older. Through a host of special amenities the program helps older adults maintain a healthy and independent lifestyle.

The library collaborated in a Rediscovering U program, an afternoon of exploration and fun for older adults. The keynote speaker was Sandra Tsing Loh and workshops were offered on finding purpose, aging with a positive outlook, boosting brain health, leveraging YouTube, and optimizing vitality.

The Santa Monica Public Library: Pico Branch Library works with the Virginia Avenue Park to create festivals for the community, such as the Arts & Literacy Festival, which takes place every year in the Spring. The festival is full of activities, storytimes, and musical performances to entertain children and promote reading.

WISE & Healthy Aging

WISE & Healthy Aging is a leader, trusted expert, premier service provider and influential voice on aging. Their mission and vision is to reach a diverse community of older adults at all stages of their lives. This partnership offers programs that advance the dignity and quality of life of older adults through leadership, advocate and high-quality, innovative services. One such program is the drop in Appy Hour, where older adults can obtain one-on-one assistance related to technology.


The Friday before the Annual YALLWEST Young Adult Book Festival, the Main Library hosts Fierce Friday, an exclusive after-hours preview event featuring the biggest young adult literature authors, who greet and mingle with fans, and sign their books. In addition to this, fans can participate in fun activities, such as in previous years, VR experience.
